The Food and Drug Administration has approved a surgical bandage developed by Portland-based HemCon Medical Technologies Inc.

The GuardaCareXR Surgical is a gauze dressing coated with chitosan, a shrimp-derived blood clotting agent, and an X-ray-blocking element. It's designed to stop uncontrolled bleeding during surgery. 

The surgical hemostat market is valued at $850 million this year, the company said.
